  I saw him for a brief moment. This was many years ago. I was transferring trains at a crowded local station in Mumbai. Switching to the next platform involved climbing a tall staircase, crossing over, and climbing down another. I had barely a minute to make it to the next platform. Clutching my backpack, I ran up the stairs. I was almost out of breath. It was at the top that I saw him. A blind man with a stick in his hand. Carrying a child on his shoulders,around four or five years old. With a scared woman, probably his wife, clutching his arm, half-withdrawing behind him. The man was calm. He was not rushed. He was feeling his way forward, carrying his child and leading his family to the platform. He was like an elephant walking with measured steps in the middle of scurrying ants. The feeling that bubbled up in me was respect. Rather than resigning himself to his fate, here he was, staring it right in the eye with a resolve that could not be shaken. പാതകം  പതിയെ പതിയെവിട്ടി-                            ട്ടന്യനെച്ചെന്നു   കണ്ടാൾ പതിത പതിവുതെറ്റാ-                     തെട്ടുമാസം കഴിച്ചാൾ  പതി തപതി ഉറക്കം                     കെട്ടു നിശ്വാസദീർഘൻ  പതിരു,  പതിയിരുന്നനാൻ,                      പാറ്റിദൂരെക്കളഞ്ഞാൻ!

നില്ല്!!!       പൂകില്ല കാട്ടാളാ! നിത്യമായ നികേതനം;   ഇച്ചകോരങ്ങൾ ചേർന്നപ്പോൾ കൊന്നില്ലേ ഇണയൊന്നിനെ?

Practice Self Care! Nobody really cares if you die. The world does not stop after you die.  That manager that really wanted you to succeed, Who coached and groomed you to be his successor, Will put out a new req. The PRs that you spent hours debugging and fine-tuning -  Someone else will merge them; Or, close them. The P&Ps that you pored over and spent hours updating -  Will still get updated.  That best friend who you thought you could not live without - Will mourn you for some time; And then will find another friend. Your family and relatives for whom you sacrificed most of your life - including your self-time -  Will move on after a memorial. The world will go on after you go. So take care of yourself while you are here.

വയലിൻനടുവിലിരുന്നൊരു പെണ്മണി  വയലിൻ മീട്ടുന്നു  തബലത്താളം ചേർക്കാൻ വയ്യാ-  തബലകളാർക്കുന്നു  സിത്താർതന്ത്രികൾ  ഗിത്താറൊപ്പം  ചിത്തമുലയ്ക്കുന്നു  വീണാനാദം മോഹിപ്പിച്ചു  വീണാറാമോദാൽ  (ശകലം - 8/11/2024, completed 9/10/2024)

   "ക്ലാസ്സിൽ ഒറ്റയ്ക്കിരിക്കുമ്പോൾ അവൾ ചിന്തിച്ചത് " എന്ന വിഷയത്തിൽ ഒരു കവിത എഴുതുമോ? (പെട്ടെന്നെഴുതിയതാണ്; മിനുക്കാൻ സമയം കിട്ടിയില്ല.) "കണക്കും കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറും    പഠിച്ചിട്ടെന്താ കാര്യം വണക്കത്തോടെ വല്ല    വീട്ടിലും ചേക്കേറേണ്ടോൾ?!" അടക്കം പറഞ്ഞതു     മറ്റാരുമല്ല, ശാസ്ത്രം  പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്ന സ്വന്തം     വത്സമ്മട്ടീച്ചർ തന്നെ! ചെറുക്കന്മാരും ചില      കുശുമ്പിപ്പെമ്പിള്ളേരും ഉറക്കെ ചിരിച്ചപ്പോൾ      വിഷമം വന്നു; പക്ഷേ  പടുത്ത പന്തങ്ങളെ      കൊളുത്തേണ്ടുന്ന തിരി,  കെടുത്താൻ ശ്രമിച്ചല്ലോ     എന്നിലെ കൊച്ചു നാളം! ഉത്തരം പറഞ്ഞതും      തെറ്റൊന്നു പിണഞ്ഞതും പെണ്ണായാൽ പാടില്ലെന്നോ?     ആണുങ്ങൾക്കാവാമെന്നോ? "ഡോക്ടർമാർ -  ആൺകുട്ടികൾ,     നേഴ്‌സുമാർ - പെൺകുട്ടികൾ"  ഇങ്ങനെ തരംതിരി-     വെങ്ങനെ ന്യായമാകും? ഗണിതം പഠിക്കുവാൻ      മിടുക്കുണ്ടെനി, ക്കതു  ഗണിക്കാതിരുന്നാലോ      സ്വയവഞ്ചന തന്നെ! പ്രതിസ...

അരമണിനേരമിരുന്നൊരു ബാല  അരമണി ചെമ്പുമുലഞ്ഞൊരു  ചേല അരമണിയാൾ! അവൾ  ചെയ്തൊരു വേല! അരമണിവോർക്കൻപുണ്ടാകേല! അരമണിനേരം = അര മണിക്കൂർ നേരം  അരമണി = അരയിലെ മണി  അരമണി = അ + രമണി = രമണിയല്ലാത്തവൾ  അരമണിവോർ  = അരം + അണിവോർ = അരം അണിയുന്നവർ = ശിക്ഷ കൊടുക്കുന്നവർ  (രണ്ടാം വരി  വെറും വർണ്ണനയാണ്.  ഈ  സ്ത്രീ ചെയ്‌ത വേലയെന്താണെന്ന് വ്യക്തമല്ല.)

 വിവിയൻ ഞങ്ങളുടെ  ആദ്യസന്താനമാണ്. ചുരുണ്ട മുടിയുള്ള, മിഴിഞ്ഞ കണ്ണുള്ള, ചുറുചുറുക്കുള്ള ഒരു ഏഴുവയസ്സുകാരി. വിവിയനെ  വീട്ടിൽ ഞങ്ങൾ പല പേരുകൾകൊണ്ടു വിളിക്കാറുണ്ട്. ഇവയിൽ ചിലതിന് നേരിട്ടർത്ഥമുണ്ട്; മറ്റുചിലതാകട്ടെ ഒറ്റക്കേൾവിയിൽ വിചിത്രമായി തോന്നും.  ഈ വിളിപ്പേരുകൾ വന്ന വഴികൾ പലതാണ്. അവയുടെ കഥകളാണ് ഈ  ലേഖനത്തിൽ.  വി / വിവി  ഈ രൂപങ്ങൾ വിവിയൻ നേരിട്ടു ലോപിച്ചുണ്ടായവ തന്നെ.  ഇത്തരുണത്തിൽ വിവിയൻ എന്ന പേരിന്റെ വ്യുല്പത്തിയും പറയാം.  ഇതൊരു ഇംഗ്ളീഷ് പേരാണെങ്കിൽകൂടി   -അൻ എന്ന പുരുഷപ്രത്യയം കേട്ടുശീലിച്ച മലയാളിച്ചെവികൾക്ക് പേരുകേൾക്കുമ്പോഴേ എന്തോ ഒരു പന്തികേടു തോന്നുന്നത് സ്വാഭാവികം. ആ സംശയം ശരിയുമാണ്. വിവിയൻ (Vivian) ശരിക്കും പറഞ്ഞാൽ ആൺകുട്ടികളുടെ പേരാണ്, പെൺകുട്ടികൾക്ക് വിവിയെൻ (Vivienne) എന്നാണ് വരേണ്ടത്.  മലയാളഭാഷയിൽ ഇത്രയധികം അഭിമാനിക്കുന്ന ഞാൻ, ഞാനും ഭാര്യയും തമ്മിൽ വളരെ ചിന്തിച്ചതിനുശേഷം എടുത്ത തീരുമാനമാണെങ്കിലും, എങ്ങനെ ആദ്യത്തെ കുട്ടിക്ക് ഇംഗ്ളീഷ് പേരിട്ടു?  യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ  വിവിയൻ എന്ന പേരുവന്നത് ഞങ്ങളുടെ  രണ്ടുപേരുടെ...

A sad little song was my companion today.  She danced on my lips and played a soft tune She mused in my heart and comforted my soul Because she was with me, my journey was not lonely. She held my hands when walking the path That disappeared into the fog A path that seemed to lead nowhere The warmth of her palms in my hands Compensated for the chill around -  A bit I wished it was a different journey With a lot of people Towards a glorious destination. But for now, It is just me And her -  My sad little song.
